I am recruiting a small group of people to work closely with me with on a new start-up business. The concept will take a non-traditional approach to design and retailing and ask us to think a little differently about products, their value, and their context.  The business will be launched later this year in San Francisco. The start date is flexible but can be immediate for the right people. There are two full-time positions and several part-time positions available. The full-time roles require highly organized and efficient people with 5–10 years experience and demonstrated commitment in retail operations and sales. This is an opportunity for people who are comfortable working in the controlled chaos of a start-up. As much as I dislike the words “self-starters” or “hands-on,” these terms are relevant and aptly describe the type of attitude and professionalism needed.


OPERATIONS MANAGER – Full-time

Responsibilities include managing all aspects of the business other than product selection and presentation. Experience required in systems and logistics management, accounting, foreign importing, website management, customer service, fulfillment, and everything else. Experience working in small business environments and an appreciation for design are essential.

SALES MANAGER – Full-time

Responsibilities include overseeing the in-store experience and managing the presentation of products, communications with clients, and sales staff. This is partially a buyer role depending on experience. Only for a grounded, efficient, pleasant person with a good eye, high standards but no designer attitude, and with an appreciation for the value of everyday objects as much as established designer brands.

VISUAL DISPLAY – Part-time and As Needed

Experience in retail presentation, window display and/or theatrical set and exhibition design.

SUPPORT FUNCTIONS

We will need assistants to support the positions above and help with sales, marketing, product development and sourcing, marketing, and all the related functions in the near future.
