Patterns and Convergences

I continue to receive images and notes in response to my newsletter piece on Patterns. Reader Tobias Kestel of White Elephant in Austria set in this one of turf from Ireland. My mind raced to images I took of cut wood in Marshall California, and of roofs in Bologna. This might seem like a frivolous pastime, making these connections. I hope it is not, because it obsesses me. Fortunately, I also received this quote from Reader Howard Meister:

"The bulk of the brain is devoted to recognizing patterns." -Raymond Kurzweil

Raymond Kurzweil is an author, scientist, and futurist and generally regarded as about as smart a mind as exists, referred to as “the ultimate thinking machine." His professional credential cut across many fields and he has earned many awards and accolades. I think that we can trust his analysis, and I can trust that my preoccupation with patterns is sensible.

I can only once recall receiving more feedback than I have from my Patterns piece. It was an article I did years ago on Shoes. Mr.Kurzweil, can you explain why people are even more obsessed with Shoes than Pattern? Can anyone else shed light here?

Best,

Pattern Recognition
Out of all mental abilities this type of intelligence is said to have the highest correlation with the general intelligence factor, g. This is primarily because pattern recognition is the ability to see order in a chaotic environment; the primary condition for life.

Taken From Site ‘ IQ TEST LABS ‘ (not a familiar source…just happened upon it in a google search. )

perhaps you have apophenia?

i love that wikipedia's description of it says this:

It has been suggested that apophenia is a link between psychosis and creativity.
